Cricket World Cup Format: How the ODI Tournament Works

ICC, ODI, World Cup

The ICC Cricket World Cup crowns the men’s One Day International champion, but the path to the trophy changes between editions. The 2027 tournament uses a new system, rather than the ten-team league familiar from 2019 and 2023. Understanding the cricket world cup format starts with knowing which edition is being discussed.

The revised competition combines qualification, groups, another league phase and knockout matches. Here is how teams progress, how standings matter and why the changes affect the race for the title.

What Is the Men’s ODI Cricket World Cup?

The International Cricket Council (ICC) organises the men’s ODI World Cup, normally held every four years. In a standard ODI, each team can bat for up to 50 overs, unless dismissed or affected by a shortened match. This creates a different contest from the faster T20 format, rewarding sustained batting, varied bowling and smart management of the innings.

For the underlying match rules, see our guide to how ODI cricket works.

How the 2027 Cricket World Cup Format Works

The 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia from 2 October to 21 November. Fourteen teams will participate across 57 scheduled matches. In July 2026, the ICC confirmed a revised format: a preliminary Super Series, two groups of six, a Super 7 round, two semi-finals and the final.

Super Series: Three Teams, One Group-Stage Place

The second-, third- and fourth-placed teams from the Cricket World Cup Qualifier enter the Super Series. Each plays the other two once. After those three matches, only the leading team advances to the main groups.

The Qualifier winner enters the group stage directly. That explains why the overall field contains 14 countries but only 12 play in the main cricket world cup groups: two teams exit during the opening Super Series.

Group Stage: Two Groups of Six

The 12 survivors are placed into Group A and Group B, each with six teams. Every team faces its five group opponents once, creating 15 matches per group and 30 in total.

The three highest-placed teams from each group advance automatically. One final Super 7 place goes to the better fourth-placed side across both groups. Consequently, finishing fourth does not necessarily mean elimination; results in the other group could decide a team’s fate.

Imagine the fourth-placed side in Group A earns six points while Group B’s fourth-placed team has four. Group A’s team would take the remaining place. If they finish tied on points, the tournament’s official ranking tie-breakers become important. That is why followers should check both standings tables.

Super 7: Seven Teams Start Again

All seven teams entering the Super 7 face one another once. Each therefore plays six games, giving this phase 21 matches. The top four qualify for the semi-finals.

There is a significant reset: no group-stage points carry into the 2027 Super 7. A team that won every earlier group match begins the new table level with its opponents. Group success secures a place, not an advantage in the next standings. The format makes later results especially consequential.

Semi-Finals and Final

The world cup knockout stage pairs the first-placed Super 7 team with fourth, and second with third. The two semi-final winners meet in the final on 21 November 2027. Previous form offers no protection: losing a semi-final ends a team’s title campaign.

The match arithmetic is straightforward: three Super Series games, 30 group matches, 21 Super 7 fixtures, two semi-finals and one final equal 57 matches.

Understanding World Cup Points and Net Run Rate

Group positions are determined by results and, when teams are level, relevant tie-breaking rules. In 2023, teams earned two points for a win, one for a tie or no result, and zero for a loss. That edition’s rules used the number of wins before net run rate when teams finished on equal points.

Net run rate (NRR) compares a side’s overall scoring rate with the rate scored against it in relevant matches. Big victories can improve it and heavy defeats can damage it. Special calculation rules apply when a side is all out, so the official figure is more involved than simply comparing final totals.

Always check the published playing conditions for the relevant edition. The specific points and tie-breaking provisions for 2027 should not be assumed identical to those used in 2023. Our explainer on net run rate in cricket covers the calculations behind close qualification races.

How Teams Qualify for the 2027 World Cup

Qualification for the tournament happens before the stages described above. South Africa and Zimbabwe secured automatic places as hosts. Eight other teams qualified through the ICC men’s ODI rankings at the 30 September 2026 cutoff. Together, these provided ten direct places.

The remaining four tournament places are awarded through the Cricket World Cup Qualifier. The winner goes straight to the main groups, while the next three finishers contest the Super Series for one additional group-stage spot.

Namibia is a co-host but was not granted automatic qualification merely for staging matches. This illustrates the distinction between hosting and earning a playing place. Our overview of major ICC cricket tournaments offers further context on global qualification pathways.

How the 2023 ODI World Cup Format Differed

The 2019 and 2023 competitions had ten teams in a single round-robin league. Each played nine matches, with every opponent faced once. The top four advanced directly to the semi-finals, followed by the final. That meant 45 league matches and 48 fixtures overall.

There were no two separate cricket world cup groups or Super 7 phase in 2023. India won all nine league matches that year and qualified for the semi-finals, but Australia won the final. Dominating the league did not guarantee winning the trophy.

Older World Cups used other arrangements as well. Before relying on an online explanation, check the edition. A ten-team round-robin description is correct for 2023 but not for the scheduled 2027 competition.

The Route to the Trophy

The easiest way to remember the 2027 cricket world cup format is its narrowing field: 14 tournament entrants, 12 main-group teams, seven Super 7 contenders, four semi-finalists and two finalists. Every stage matters, but only the side that wins the final becomes world champion.
